Eight years ago, I came down to Coors Field to see the Rockies play live for the first time. I grew up loving baseball and played the game until I was 14, when the pressure to play (win) overtook the fun of playing the game. I was a Twins fan growing up and made many pilgrimages to the Metrodome to see the Twins and Mr. Kirby Puckett play. At a certain point my love of punk rock music usurped my love of America’s Past Time and I quit watching sports all together, it wasn’t until a friend got really excited about the Rockies that I came back to baseball. I remember sitting at that game, watching the photographers, thinking someday I want to be here, doing that.

When I got back to South Dakota and back to my job, one of the first assignments I shot an American Legion baseball game. It was an afternoon game and it was ungodly hot. The rusty old folding chairs with flecks of red paint peeling off that they placed in the “photo pit” (the only area with chain link low enough that one could shoot over) were almost too hot to sit on, the fabric on the mandatory khaki pants I had to wear to every assignment was the only thing preventing second degree burns on my hamstrings. It was miserable, to say the least, when a slight breeze broke the dry heat and it mentally brought me back to the previous weekend, to Denver. To Coors Field and hanging out with my friends.

I sent a text to my friend that just said “I wish I was at Coors Field.” What I didn’t send was the goal that I set, that one day I would be shooting baseball at Coors Field.  The goal I set based on the feeling that one day I would be here, doing this. I accomplished that goal on Friday night. I’ve always set goals of things that I want to shoot and things that I want to do. It’s never about winning awards. It’s about experiences and shooting something enough to get really good at it. I could have shot a game a lot sooner, but I was lacking the confidence that I could do it. I felt very overlooked and looked down upon for the first three years I was here. It’s amazing what one person believing in you can do. Plus if I would have forced it, I couldn’t say that the first professional baseball game that I shot was the longest nine inning game in Rockies history, clocking in at a grueling four and a half hours. I love baseball but even this was pushing it.

It’s amazing how much faster the game moves at this level. I’m excited to find my rhythm at this pace and up my reaction time. Hopefully this was the first of many, many games. Thanks for looking.

I haven’t shot baseball in over five years. I’ve photographed enough touchdowns, slapshots, checks, tackles, tries, rucks, baskets, jump shots and goals to last a lifetime in the last five years but not a single pitch or at-bat. I shot a lot of baseball when I was still in South Dakota. Rapid City was, and still is, very much a baseball town. So I’ve had my fair share of covering America’s Past Time but since I’ve been in Denver, baseball has not been a priority. Most sports have not been priority, outside of rugby. Any sports I’ve covered has been out of chance. So I jumped at the chance to shoot the 5A championship game on Sunday.

I was a little nervous, baseball can be a tough shoot. Five years of rust is not something you can knock off very quickly. Fortunately shooting rugby and hockey has upped my reaction time and watching the game at a professional level for the last five years has improved my ability to anticipate plays. The pressure was also diminished as it was a championship game (actually games as it was double elimination and they ended up playing two) so no matter what the most important photo was going to be the jubilation shot (or jub shot in journalism speak) at the end of the game.

Both games ended up being pretty decent and a lot of fun to shoot. Hopefully it won’t be five years before I shoot another game.

Thanks for looking.

Glendale Raptors vs San Francisco Golden Gate Rhinos PRP Grand Final

GLENDALE, CO – MAY 14: Glendale Raptors vs San Francisco Golden Gate Rhinos in the PRP Grand Final at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado on May 14, 2016. (Photo by Seth McConnell)

A year ago (yesterday) I slammed my hand in a car door, requiring 7 stitches in my right index finger. My shooting finger. It was two days before the PRP Grand Final. I was on strict orders to rest for ten days. No shooting, no heavy lifting. I had covered the entire season, to miss the final left me feeling pretty terrible. Through a pretty heavy haze of pain killers I followed the game on Twitter. The Raptors won, bringing home their first PRP championship. When the Raptors secured their place in the final last Saturday, I knew I needed to I make sure to be extra careful this week. I wasn’t going to miss the final two years in a row. The caution was worth it. The Raptors took home their second straight PRP championship yesterday. Dominating San Francisco Golden Gate from the opening whistle. Congratulations to the Raptors and the entire organization. Thanks for looking.

Shooting the Raptors over the last three seasons has been a ridiculous amount of fun. I had never shot rugby prior to being asked to shoot a sevens tournament, much less having ever seen a match. Its been a learning experience but a fun one at that. With PRO Rugby starting in Denver in the last month, it will be interesting to see where the game goes here in America.

Saturday’s are for rugby. Over the last three years I’ve spent almost every Saturday in the spring and fall on the pitch in Glendale shooting rugby. I haven’t blogged about it or spoke about it much. I’ve kept it under the radar for the most part and I can’t tell you why. The Glendale Raptors as an organization have been amazing and very easy to work with. Their dedication to growing the game in Denver has been awesome to watch. In an attempt to actually blog more, I’ll be posting up photos after every game starting next week. The season started a while ago so the first two months of the season will be put in digest form. Thanks for looking.

Over the last three years, I’ve been covering rugby as the official team photographer of the Glendale Raptors Rugby Club in the suburbs of Denver. Its been a rather fun and rewarding experience that has gotten me into a different mind-set and given me an opportunity to do something different and fun. Every August the club hosts the Serevi RugbyTown 7’s tournament which brings in teams from all over the country and several countries to play the speedy version of rugby.
