Anti-Trump Rally in Denver

Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump made a stop in Denver on Friday. As has been the case across the country, his presence drew a large crowd of protestors both for and against the New York business man. Thanks for looking.

Shred it: US National Air Guitar Qualifier

US Air Guitar Regional Qualifier in Denver

It’s no secret that I love to shoot weird stuff. The more bizarre the better. Having spent a good portion of my formative years watching strange punk bands play in basements, starting strange punk bands that played in VFW Halls and working in a bizarre art gallery weird just suites me. I get weird, its easy for me to embrace. So when the chance to photograph the US National Air Guitar qualifier popped up last week I jumped on it. It didn’t go quite as planned from the photo stand point (it was dark, like pitch black dark) but it was a lot of fun watching people do just that, have fun. While it was a competition it was also designed to be fun. Stage names, costumes and loud rock music from 1986. The thought process behind the competition is if you’re holding an air guitar you can’t hold a gun. It’s a message of peace… and tight pants. I can’t get behind that message.

I haven’t shot baseball in over five years. I’ve photographed enough touchdowns, slapshots, checks, tackles, tries, rucks, baskets, jump shots and goals to last a lifetime in the last five years but not a single pitch or at-bat. I shot a lot of baseball when I was still in South Dakota. Rapid City was, and still is, very much a baseball town. So I’ve had my fair share of covering America’s Past Time but since I’ve been in Denver, baseball has not been a priority. Most sports have not been priority, outside of rugby. Any sports I’ve covered has been out of chance. So I jumped at the chance to shoot the 5A championship game on Sunday.

I was a little nervous, baseball can be a tough shoot. Five years of rust is not something you can knock off very quickly. Fortunately shooting rugby and hockey has upped my reaction time and watching the game at a professional level for the last five years has improved my ability to anticipate plays. The pressure was also diminished as it was a championship game (actually games as it was double elimination and they ended up playing two) so no matter what the most important photo was going to be the jubilation shot (or jub shot in journalism speak) at the end of the game.

Both games ended up being pretty decent and a lot of fun to shoot. Hopefully it won’t be five years before I shoot another game.

GLENDALE, CO – MARCH 12: Denver Barbos vs Santa Monica Dolphins at Infinity park in Glendale, Colorado on March 12, 2016.

Saturday’s are for rugby. Over the last three years I’ve spent almost every Saturday in the spring and fall on the pitch in Glendale shooting rugby. I haven’t blogged about it or spoke about it much. I’ve kept it under the radar for the most part and I can’t tell you why. The Glendale Raptors as an organization have been amazing and very easy to work with. Their dedication to growing the game in Denver has been awesome to watch. In an attempt to actually blog more, I’ll be posting up photos after every game starting next week. The season started a while ago so the first two months of the season will be put in digest form. Thanks for looking.

Photos: St Vincent at Denver Botanic Gardens

St. Vincent Perform at Denver Botanic GardensThere are a few artists that I look forward to shooting. St Vincent was high on that list. Here live shows have always looked really cool and really fun to shoot. I have to say I was a little disappointed but it may have been more of the venue than the performance. It’s a cool venue to see a show but can be a very limiting as a venue to shoot a show especially with an artist like St. Vincent. Someone so loud and theatrical, having to turn down and play in the round, makes for an interesting challenge. I made a few frames that I like but will have to wait for another club tour to see the full, fun and loud show. More photos and a full review can be found here

More photos after the jump.

Thanks for looking.
