US Air Guitar Regional Qualifier in Denver

DENVER, CO – MAY 27: Pork Sword celebrates after winning the US Air Guitar Regional Qualifier at Lion’s Lair in Denver, Colorado on May 27, 2016. The top two scoring contestants Friday night won a chance to compete at regionals in Kansas City. (Photo by Seth McConnell/The Denver Post)

It’s no secret that I love to shoot weird stuff. The more bizarre the better. Having spent a good portion of my formative years watching strange punk bands play in basements, starting strange punk bands that played in VFW Halls and working in a bizarre art gallery weird just suites me. I get weird, its easy for me to embrace. So when the chance to photograph the US National Air Guitar qualifier popped up last week I jumped on it. It didn’t go quite as planned from the photo stand point (it was dark, like pitch black dark) but it was a lot of fun watching people do just that, have fun. While it was a competition it was also designed to be fun. Stage names, costumes and loud rock music from 1986. The¬†thought process behind the competition is if you’re holding an air guitar you can’t hold a gun. It’s a message of peace… and tight pants. I can’t get behind that message.

A little over a decade ago I had tickets to see Incubus at Red Rocks. I had made plans with friends to go, worked on saving money to drive from South Dakota down to Morrison for a few days and attend the show. Through a series of unfortunate events, I was convinced that I didn’t have the money and had to back out at the last-minute only to check my bank account the day of the show, well after my friends had left for Colorado, to find my bank account padded by several hundred dollars. I still kick myself for not going to the show. Luckily they recorded it for a DVD and I get to see my friends sitting in the front row having an amazing time…

Fortunately Incubus brought their radio friendly sound back to Red Rocks last night and for 15 minutes I had one of the best seats in the house and they brought two of my favorite bands with them. I wish I would have been able to stay for the entire show but the downside to shooting shows professionally is a very late night to meet a very early deadline in the morning.

Mini Mansions Perform at Red Rocks AmphitheatreA little rain on the filter does some amazing things in the right kind of light.

I’ve grown to embrace the late afternoon/evening rain storms here in Colorado and how much they add to shooting outdoor shows at Red Rocks.

More photos after the jump.

Photos: Denver Presidential Debate Fest 2012

with one comment

I had the pleasure a few weeks ago of being on the Post’s coverage team for the first presidential debate at the University of Denver. My job was to cover the musical acts playing an outdoor concert on the campus of DU in conjunction with the debate aptly titled Debate Fest. The fest featured a line up of local musical acts including The Lumineers and Nathaniel Rateliff.

It was a huge honor to be apart of the team covering this historic event. Even though I was not in the hall, it was amazing to be a part of the entire process. My favorite part of the day was getting the chance to work with AAron, we tag teamed Debatefest while the rest of the Post staff worked the Hall, Spin Alley and made other features. It was a blast to get out there and work it. Pushing each other and knowing that if I missed something, that AAron had it and vice-versa. It was easily the most intense credential process to shoot a concert. Very rarely does making photos at a concert involve a full background search by the Secret Service. It was well worth it though as I got full access, including the chance to make photos from the stage.
